Developed by Central Borders Red Squirrel Network, this App displays sightings of Red Squirrel, Grey Squirrel and Pine Marten from the year 2000 to the latest full year for which data is available.
Data is extracted via NBN Atlas and includes validated sightings collated by Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (squirrel sightings) and The Vincent Wildlife Trust (pine marten sightings).
Usage Guide
• The App is designed for use on Android devices and Web browsers. The device must have an Internet connection to load background mapping, though species data is fetched efficiently on-demand.
• When the App is opened, it displays sightings for the latest full year. The shade of the circles indicates density: Darker circles mean higher sightings density per square km.
• Pan, pinch and zoom to move around the map. On web, use your mouse scroll wheel and click-and-drag.
• Select a circle to view individual sightings. Zoom in for precision. Use the “Info” icon to toggle labels for date and quantity.
• The “Building” icon toggles between county-level and South Scotland Forum group areas.
• Select the species or year in the sidebar to change the current view.
• The “ALL” (four-corners) icon zooms out to the full extent of the current category.
• The “Timer” button cycles through the years. If a region is selected, it cycles sightings for that region and narrates the data (Android only).
